The correct dressing, cleaning and product routine can differ with the piece. General guidance explains the principles but cannot diagnose your skin or replace the instructions for your tattoo.

The first steps after a tattoo

Wash your hands before touching the tattoo or its dressing. Keep and remove the protective covering according to the instructions you were given. Different dressings are used for different lengths of time, so do not extend or shorten that period simply because an online video suggests another routine.

After removal, clean the area gently as directed. Do not scrub. Use a clean method to pat the skin dry and apply only the product and amount your artist recommended. Avoid mixing ointments, fragranced products or active skincare ingredients without guidance.

If a dressing becomes loose, fills with water, leaks or causes a reaction that concerns you, contact the artist for piece-specific guidance. A general article cannot determine whether that dressing should be replaced.

What to avoid while the skin is settling

  • Do not scratch, pick or pull away flaking skin.
  • Avoid soaking, swimming, saunas and long periods in water until the skin has settled.
  • Reduce friction from tight or unclean clothing and avoid dirty surfaces.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure. After the skin has fully settled, ongoing sun protection can help limit ultraviolet exposure.
  • Do not use another person’s routine as a substitute for your own artist’s instructions.

Think about how the placement interacts with daily life. Waistbands, shoes, backpack straps, work equipment and repeated movement may rub the area, so clothing and activity may need to be adjusted.

Heat, humidity and daily life in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s heat and humidity can make commuting, outdoor work and exercise sweaty. Choose clean, loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Swimming pools, beaches, saunas and high-sweat exercise can expose unsettled skin to water, friction or unclean surfaces.

Adjust these activities according to the condition of the skin and your artist’s instructions. If work or daily life will involve water, dust, sunlight or repeated friction, mention it before the appointment so the advice can account for the placement.

When to seek medical care

A website cannot assess your skin. Seek prompt advice from a qualified health professional if pain is persistent or worsening, redness or heat is spreading noticeably, there is pus-like discharge, you develop a fever, or there is any rapid change that concerns you.

A tattoo studio can provide context about the tattoo and aftercare instructions, but it cannot diagnose or treat an infection. Do not delay medical care because a photograph, social media comment or general article says a symptom is normal.

Long-term care after the skin has settled

Once the skin has fully settled, maintain a normal skincare routine that agrees with your skin and limit excessive sun exposure. Tattoo appearance can change with skin type, placement, activity, aftercare, ultraviolet exposure and time. No studio should guarantee that a tattoo will remain identical to the day it was completed.

Sources for medical warning signs

The warning signs and general risks above draw on public dermatology and hospital information. Dressing and timing instructions for your individual piece still come from your artist on the day.

Tattoo aftercare FAQ

How long should I keep the dressing on?

It depends on the dressing and the individual piece. Follow the timing given by your artist rather than a universal number online.

When can I exercise again?

Consider placement, rubbing, sweat and the environment. Follow piece-specific guidance and ask if the activity places pressure on the area.

When can I swim?

Avoid soaking while the skin is still healing or unsettled. Ask your artist if you are unsure about the condition of the area.

Is redness always normal?

An article cannot determine that. If redness, heat or pain persists or worsens, or if you have discharge or fever, seek medical care.
